I took HIS101 on my first year. It's a pretty good foundation course. It's a full year course with only two major essays. The first writing assignment is only worth 5% because they know you're just getting into uni writing and stuff, and the assignment start weighing more as the course progresses. The readings are not too long and readings the textbook isn't mandatory. I never read it and ended with an A+. You do have to do the tutorial readings though because that's the only thing you'll talk about in tutorial. The length depends on the week but it's very doable!
