Sociology of Gun Violence

This course examines gun violence through a sociological lens, focusing on street gang shootings and mass shootings. We begin by exploring how gun violence and its persistent threat shape urban community life, revealing deeper structural inequities that limit opportunities for the urban poor. The course then considers the aftermath of shootings for victims and families, the health disparities linked to gun violence, and policy interventions that have reduced these patterns. We also address medical innovations and outpatient care for gunshot victims, alongside research on trauma. In the latter part, we analyze mass shootings such as Isla Vista and Columbine, investigating their causes, consequences, and societal reactions. Discussions will include media narratives, policy responses, and insights from shooter manifestos. By the end, students will develop a critical understanding of gun violence and learn to navigate misinformation surrounding this complex issue.
