Pluralism and Toleration

This course examines how religious traditions operate within modern systems of political and legal pluralism, where multiple sources of authority and legitimacy coexist. With critical attention to philosophical and legal concepts of pluralism, toleration, and sovereignty, the course will examine how specific religions engage with secular courts, democratic governance, and each other in modern states. Topics and may include multi-jurisdictional authority, family law, minority rights, and the role of religious expertise in public institutions.
