Classical Arabic Prose

Read the classics in the original Arabic! This class surveys the rich and varied literary prose traditions in the Arabic language from early Islam to the Mamluk period, including an early Arabic version of Majnūn Laylā, the Maqāmāt, al-Jāḥiẓ, Ibn Qutayba, and stories from the 1001 Nights. The course focuses on developing reading skills specific to classical Arabic texts, and on developing an ability to analyze the themes, literary techniques, genres, and ideas within those texts. Throughout, we will seek an understanding of the historic notion of adab as a concept that overlaps with, but is also distinct from, the modern concept of literature. Heritage speakers of Arabic are encouraged to register; please contact the instructor to confirm your Arabic level before the start of class.
