A theoretical approach to: vector spaces over arbitrary fields, including C and Z_p. Subspaces, bases and dimension. Linear transformations, matrices, change of basis, similarity, determinants. Polynomials over a field (including unique factorization, resultants). Eigenvalues, eigenvectors, characteristic polynomial, diagonalization. Minimal polynomial, Cayley-Hamilton theorem.

MAT240 introduces very abstract concepts like dual spaces that take significant time to internalize. I struggled through dual spaces—the most abstract thing I'd done—and kept hitting mental walls. However, it's worth persisting because the concepts eventually click and become useful in other math courses later on, even if it takes a long time after the course ends.
