Mathematics and Art

This course will explore the various bridges between Mathematics and Art. We will combine exploration of mathematical concepts with the artistic visualization of those concepts through a range of mediums, including fine art, architecture, origami, textile, fiber art, dance and movement, craft, and digital art. We will investigate the potential of mathematics to generate visually appealing objects that reveal some of the structure of the underlying mathematics. On the flip side, we study existing artworks from a mathematical vantage point to uncover new aspects of their beauty. One of the main goals of the course is to open a new window to process mathematical concepts and to link the creative processes inherent in both mathematics and the arts.  Along the way students develop insight into the diversity and overarching nature of mathematics as well as an intuitive understanding of concepts such as numerical sequences, Euclidean geometry, tiling, fractals, platonic solids, hyperbolic geometry, and topology. This course is a combination of theory and hands on activities. Restricted to first-year students. Not eligible for CR/NCR option.
