The North American City

This course is a survey of cities in North America (including Central America and the Caribbean). Like other regions of the world, the cities of North America are a complicated product of physical, economic, cultural, and political forces. The course will focus on how those forces have generated a range of cities in North America, and how those bundles of characteristics differ from other regions. Three areas will be given particular focus: urban form, governance, and economic forces. Students will acquire knowledge not only about the range of North American cities but also the ways that broader forces generate particular urban outcomes throughout the world.
