Learning through Mohawk Language Documentation

Indigenous language documentation is an expanding field within Indigenous language revitalization that combines research, pedagogy, and community collaboration. This course examines the planning, implementation, production, and dissemination of ethical and community-driven language documentation designed to support language teaching and learning. Students will first explore how contemporary contexts of Indigenous language shift and vitality inform current approaches to documentation. They will then investigate how collaborative, community-based documentation practices can strengthen the work of Indigenous language learners, teachers, and speakers. The course culminates in a hands-on project that engages students in a community-centered documentation initiative aligned with local goals, while addressing key aspects of data management, language analysis, and knowledge mobilization.
