Non-Communicable Diseases: A Global Health Challenge

This course explores the connection between biological processes involved in the development of non-communicable diseases that affect Canadians and the greater global community. Students will critically examine precursors of disease from early life throughout the life course to understand metabolic processes and disease etiology and their manifestation across populations against a backdrop of an everchanging sociocultural, geopolitical, and environmental climate. The course explores the intersection of biological factors and processes, and the evolution of chronic disease management alongside learning about the application of historical medical/public health practices. Students will also critically examine the intersection of biology and developmental determinants of health involved in the perpetuation of racial disparities of chronic disease and implications for effective population-level interventions and prevention efforts.
