The first goal of this seminar is to help students read complex primary sources with a more critical eye, especially narrative sources (Lives of Saints) and "normative" sources (rules and customaries). The second goal is to study the evolution of the monastic ideal from its origin to the 12th century. (Joint undergraduate-graduate)
