Performing Arts in "Canada"

This course will explore historical and contemporary contexts of Theatre and Performing Arts in Canada from Colony to Nation-State, that consider how creators - playwrights, directors, choreographers, performance artists, designers - have engaged with social and political issues in and related to the nation-state of "Canada". Topics will include impacts of and on Indigenous modes of performance, Francophone theatre, relations to the British Empire and Commonwealth, and cultural influences of immigrant, refugee, and diasporic populations and cultural practices. These broader themes will be considered at the intersections of class, religion, race, gender, and sexual identity.
