Examination of Chinese films in their three post-World War II production centres: The People's Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Includes study of Shanghai films of the 1930s and 1940s. Commercial, political, and aesthetic trends; international reception; major auteurs and genres (including melodrama, wuxia pian and crime films). Directors include Tsui Hark, Chen Kaige, Zang Yimou, John Woo, Wong Kar-Wai, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Feng Xiaogang. This course is offered through the Summer Abroad program.
