An overview of the fundamental principles of synthetic organic chemistry, selectivity considerations, reaction mechanism, and synthetic planning. Topics include methods for C–C, C=C, C–N, and C–O bond formations, functional group transformations, protecting groups, and an introduction to heterocyclic chemistry. Aspects of chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity will be showcased through example syntheses of pharmaceuticals, natural products, pheromones, and other biologically interesting compounds.

If you enjoyed CHM247 then definitely take CHM342! The course is more challenging (denser content / faster pace) but if you have solid foundations from 1st/2nd year organic chem then you would like the course too (there's no better feeling than being able to solve a complex synthesis question ahhh). The class average for the midterm was 58% but it's because people either got above 80 or below 30.
