UTSGOrganic Chemistry
An introductory course in organic chemistry, based around the themes of structure, bonding, reaction mechanism, and synthesis. Reactions are discussed with a view to understanding mechanisms and how they are useful in the multi-step synthesis of medicinally and industrially important compounds. An introduction to the spectroscopy of organic molecules is also given, as well as a discussion of topics relating to the biological behaviour of organic molecules and medicinal chemistry. Students are also introduced to green chemistry approaches from an experimental perspective. This course continues from CHM151Y1 or CHM136H1 and is designed for students enrolled in any chemistry specialist or major program. (Lab Materials Fee: approximately $40).

CHM247 and CHM249 both got progressively more difficult over the course of the year during tests, since there is more to understand and remember as you go. CHM247 seemed to be a lot harder in terms of test content compared to CHM249, with there being little to no reactions on CHM249's first midterm. If you're bad at doing organic chemistry under time pressure, the larger lab component of CHM249 is a lifesaver. Starting last semester they removed several of the formal reports for CHM249 students, while also keeping report writing more straightforward with a very clear mark breakdown compared to CHM247.
