Introductory Organic Chemistry I

CHM135H1 and CHM136H1 cannot be taken in the same session. This course offers an introduction to organic chemistry with an emphasis on the fundamental principles of structure, bonding, reactivity, and structural identification of organic molecules. Chemical reactivity is discussed from a mechanistic perspective and includes an introduction into multi-step synthesis of organic compounds, with a focus on the reactivity of pi-bonds as electrophiles (aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids) and as nucleophiles (alkenes). Students are also introduced to green chemistry principles, primarily in the laboratory, where practical skills are introduced to understand, identify, separate, and prepare organic compounds with a focus on biological or medicinally relevant examples. This course is recommended for students in life and health science programs. (Lab Materials Fee: approximately $27).

Similar to CHM135 with the rotating profs but much harder in terms of the content. Doing the practice problems is a must.
