The Power of the Press: Materials and Histories of Print Media

Print as a medium has influenced art, society, and politics throughout cultures and history. This course studies the historic and ongoing significance of print, from prehistoric stencils and woodblock prints through to modern zines and 3D-printed architecture. Students will engage in scholarly and practice-based research in the Print Studio and experiment with a variety of print techniques that explore their significance in specific industries and cultural moments. They will also work closely with special collections and archives within the UofT Library system. Students will apply their research and practice to produce their own edition of prints as a culminating project.
