Hormones and Behaviour: Biocultural Anthropological Perspectives

This course takes a deep dive into one angle of biocultural anthropology by introducing bidirectional interactions between human behavior and hormonal responses, with an emphasis on psychosocial stressors, prosociality, challenge, arousal, and biological rhythms. It also surveys logistical and ethical issues concerning the collection and analysis of biomarker data in anthropological, biosocial, biodemographic, and epidemiological research. This course does include lab tutorials covering topics such as anthropometric measurement, biomarker collection techniques, general hormonal assay protocols, survey design, data analysis, and point of care testing techniques. Where possible, we tie in discussions and implications for biocultural theory and measurement. (Course materials fee: $25).
